Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and forensic scientists spent Monday scrutinizing the crime scene at the 900 block of Valleywood Cove where a 59-year-old man was fatally shot by a Collierville police officer.

Preliminary information indicates the incident began at 8:10 a.m. when officers responded to a call regarding a “possibly suicidal man with a gun” outside of a home on Valleywood Cove.

Reports state that numerous officers encountered the armed man in the backyard of his home.

“After repeated demands for the man to drop the weapon, at some point, for reasons still under investigation, at least one of the officers opened fire, striking and killing the man,” reports state.

The deceased individual has been identified as David Richard Hoal.

At the request of 30th District Attorney General Amy Weirich, TBI agents began investigating the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting on Monday morning.

Agents will continue to gather “any and all relevant evidence and interviews in support of this ongoing investigation.” Throughout the process, investigative findings will be passed along to the District Attorney General for her review and consideration.

The TBI does not identify the law enforcement officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective agencies.

The officer is now on administrative leave.

Collierville police officers are equipped with dashboard cameras. However, they do not have body cameras.
