| THE COLLIERVILLE HERALD Serving Collierville Since 1870 The Collierville Herald has covered the news of Collierville and the surrounding area for 130 years. Since 1870 when cotton was the region's king, this newspaper has recorded actions of the town's government and events important to the people of the town. From community balls and picnics in the 1870s, horseracing on a track built in 1898 near Highways 72 and 57, bank robberies in the 1930s and the reign of the first Cheese Carnival queen in 1935, this newspaper has been there. Today, The Collierville Herald continues to preserve the town's history with coverage of government, civic organizations, the faith and business communities and the schools. A main goal is to support the educational community however possible. From school sports or a kindergarten class project to honor rolls, we want to leave the message that students' accomplishments are newsworthy, important not only to them, their teachers and parents, but also to this community - our society - as a whole. Also significant to Collierville is the role of commerce. A village along a stage coach route, when the Memphis and Charleston Railroad made its way through in the early 1850s, the town grew as an economic hub. In support of the role commerce continues to play in citizens' quality of life and the area's financial well-being, in August 2009, The Collierville Herald added The Herald Extra. Every week, 25,000 households - approximately 58,000 Extra readers - in Shelby, Fayette and Hardeman counties receive community news and shopper information in their mailboxes.
